Maungu is a 53,000-acre wildlife conservancy and ranch located in south-eastern Kenya in Voi, Taita Taveta County.
It is part of the expansive contiguous Tsavo/Mkomazi ecosystem and the greater Kilimanjaro, Amboseli, Tsavo-Mkomanzi landscape.
The landscape is thus a critical wildlife dispersal area between Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks and a critical migratory corridor.
Besides wildlife conservation and eco-tourism, the landscape is also suitable carbon-training initiatives and mineral exploration.
OUR VISION
To be a lead model conservancy in the Tsavo Conservancy Area (TCA) for the benefit of the shareholders and community
OUR MISSION
To maximise sustainable utilization of available resources in ranching, wildlife and nature-based enterprises for improved social, economic and environmental wellbeing of shareholders and community
Maungu Ranching was formed in the 1970s by a few representatives from the then larger Mbololo location consisting of 5 regions: Mraru, Tausa, Ndome, Ghazi, and Wongonyi. The representatives included Ikonge Mwamukunda, Dickson Mbogo, Christopher Mwakau and Hezron Ruma.
The leadership then allocated land to the founding representatives in the Maungu area, adjacent to Sagalla, thus the name Maungu. Later, they were relocated to the current location because the Sagalla people wanted a ranch closer to its people. Therefore, the Sagalla and Maungu ranches were swapped, but the name Maungu was retained.
At turn of the new millennium, the shareholders through their elected directors acquired the land title, renewed land lease and set up basic governance structures. Despite the challenges over the years, Maungu’s shareholding has grown to a membership of about 2,800.
In 2022, the Maungu Wildlife Conservancy- Integrated Management Plan (2022 to 2031) was launched to enhance land use productivity in Maungu through biodiversity conservation. It outlines the major issues of concerns and the options to address them. It also explores zonation scheme and strategic operational management programmes. operational management programmes.
Our Secretariat is a small, competent team of problem-solvers committed to bettering the lives of the local community through effective natural resources management.
Together we are transforming the socio-economic welfare of the local community in Maungu through sustainable livestock production and conservation.
