Maungu’s primary business since the establishment of the ranch in the 1970s has been livestock keeping, including fattening and selling of beef steers, meat goat and sheep. The ranch has also embarked on building its own breeding herd.

Community Outreach
The interests of human habitation and that of biodiversity conservation overlap, creating competition for space and resources.
We, therefore, continuously seek to be a catalyst for community engagement to address these concerns, including improving the community’s access to water (by providing enough water pans for wildlife inside the conservancy; supporting the community to explore emerging nature-based ventures and conservation/tourism-based opportunities in the area.
We also strive to provide education bursaries to the communities living adjacent to Maungu.
03
Conservation
We are doing away with the “either/or” model of land use where wildlife conservation and livestock keeping were seen as separate and competing sectors by incorporating best integrated land management techniques and practices, which are reconciling livestock keeping and wildlife conservation.
04
Tourism
We are exploring potential tourism products in Maungu, including guided nature walks,/walking safaris, game drives, cultural visits/village walks, bird watching, camping and agro-tourism.
05
Mining
Maungu has a designated area where various types of minerals can be prospected. The ranch gives consent to individual with prospecting rights where they pay a fee to obtain the consent, which is an income to the ranch/conservancy.
06
Real Estate
In 2024, Maungu commenced the construction of a four-story building located in Voi town. The building, which combines commercial spaces and residential apartments, is part of Maungu Conservancy’s income diversification plan.
07
Carbon Credit
Maungu and Wildlife Works signed a carbon trading agreement in 2010 to ensure that the conservation values of the land are protected, maintained, improved and conserved until the expiry of the agreement in 20 years’ time. The trading on carbon credit is ongoing and the ranch is already realizing some financial benefits.
